Live reviews from Bierbeek Blues Festival in Belgium.
Even at this early hour the place was packed and the audience was
drinking his words and guitar playing - speechless. Tim Lothar Petersen
proves that he's able to captivate an audience at a festival as well
as in a cosy blues club.
Blues On Stage - Bierbeek Blues Festival, April 2007
As an acoustic act, he knows how to make an impression on his audience.
The man has a great voice and the guitar have no secrets for him anymore.
He's a very interesting and charismatic musician.
Keys & Chords - Bierbeek Blues Festival, April 2007
Isn't it wonderful how a Danish guy after a psychic loop across
the sea finds himself with both feet in the Mississippi Delta mud.
Tim Lothar clearly is a man of emotions and hopefully he'll keep
on digging for songs in precisely that ground.

Blues Bytes (USA) - August 2006 (english)
Tim Lothar Petersen has been a busy man lately. Over the past couple
of years, the drummer for the Danish band Lightnin Moe, has
been locked away in his spare time learning to play guitar. One
listen to his debut release, Cut To The Bone, and you will realize
that hes learned his lessons well
very well indeed.
Petersen cut this disc, a collection of Delta blues, at his home,
and wrote seven of the ten tracks, playing acoustic guitar and singing
unaccompanied. The cover tunes are Charley Pattons High
Sheriff Blues, Leadbellys Bound To Go, and
Willie Browns
M & O Blues, and Petersen does a very good job on
each of them. Wisely, he doesnt try to imitate them vocally,
opting instead to sing them his own voice.
The original compositions range from the gentle Dont Hesitate,
to Katrina, a haunting look at the devastating storm
that may be the highlight of the disc, and Amalina,
a pretty instrumental dedicated to Petersens daughter.
Throughout, Petersen displays a surprisingly deft touch on guitar (surprising,
given the fact that hes only recently started playing), and
his vocals are mannered, but confident. Theres no question
that this style of music is very dear to Petersens heart.
Its obvious with every note he plays and sings.
Cut To The Bone is a very pleasant surprise and fans of acoustic blues will definitely enjoy it.

Blues Magazine (France) - July 2006 (english)
Note : cd-selection of the month, July 2006
For his first solo album, Tim Lothar Petersen has left his band Lightnin'
Moe and the electric Blues, and invites you into his world of acoustic
Blues music, touching it´s origins and the Delta. The CD is
not just a surprise but a real shock, and for sure one of the best
acoustic Blues albums of the last twelve months. A CD to get without
any hesitation.
A guitar player with Blues in his blood, Tim offers you ten songs
(of which eight are signed by Tim himself) and gives you the imagination
that you're somewhere in the Delta, sitting nearby one of the bluesmen
who lived as a slave in the cotton fields. The guitar and Tim's
voice sounds so close to you, that you feel that he is sitting just
next to you, as in the night, after a hard working day : emotional
moments are guaranteed while listening to these songs.
The opening track, Easy Baby, signatures this album, full of emotion,
followed by a great High Sheriff Blues (by Charley Patton), then
followed by a beautiful Don't Hesitate, that touches your soul,
where Blues music becomes blue coloured. And this is what makes
this album so great.
A CD that you will place next to the ones of the greatest bluesmen,
in the midst of the greatest, this is for sure.

Blues Magazine (France) - July 2006 (francois)

MazzMusikaS (Belgium) - 2006 (english)
Denmark is not the first country that springs to mind as far as
the blues is concerned. Nevertheless there are sufficient artists
there who are dedicated to the blues, just as in our country. The
genuine blues feeling does not know borders. When I listened to
the cd of Lothar Petersen (37 minutes) for the first time, and I
always do that without informing myself in advance, I was in for
a pleasant surprise. A man with his guitar and his (slide) dobro,
singing and playing in the splendid tradition of the Mississippi
delta blues. Great examples: Charley Patton (his High Sheriff Blues
is one of the three covers on this album), Leadbelly (Bound To Go
is cover no. 2, with added stanzas), Willie Brown (cover no. 3:
M&O blues), Son House, Skip James and of course Robert Johnson.
This record was recorded with a computer, two mics and a simple
mixer, in his living room. The simplicity works wonders, the sound
is very good. His seven originals are treated in the same bald,
quiet way. The lyrics are very basic, as in the opener Easy Baby:
'Easy baby, it will be alright. I wanna hold you close to me tonight.
You fool around, baby just take your time. Somehow, baby, I'll make
you mine'. Apparently Tim himself likes to fool around,
according to the lyrics of Baby Blue: Oh, baby blue, you know
I'll be true. Ain't fooling around, baby, ain't cheating you. Sometimes
I'm gone, gone all night long, you just have to trust me, I won't
do no wrong'. Very moving. The lyrics of his song about the meanwhile
more than notorious Katrina also have such a genuine down to earth
approach.
Tim Lothar is in fact a drummer (in the Danish blues band Lightnin
Moe), but what he produces on the guitar is very good indeed. The
closing track, Amalina, is a beautiful instrumental on the slide
dobro and accentuates his skill. Surprising CD.

Back To The Roots (Belgium) - 2006 (english)
We already know Tim Lothar Petersen as the drummer of the Danish
bluesband Lightnin' Moe (BTTR 51). We didn't knew Tim also knows
how to play the dobroguitar. To prove this he locked himself at
home to create 'Cut To The Bone', with only two mics and his computer.
Seven songs are written by himself. The other three are 'High Sheriff
Blues' by Charley Patton, 'Bound To Go' by Leadbelly and 'M &
O Blues' by Willie Brown.
It looks as if Tim has tried to relocate the delta to Danmark for a
short period of time. "Did he succed?" is probably the
next question you will ask. To be honest, it's not easy to go back
and walk the footsteps of the old masters with just your voice,
an acoustic guitar and some footstompin'. It's even harder when
you try to do this with your own compositions. And although Petersen's
voice sometimes sounds a little bit to well-behaved, he works his
way around this project. His playing is acceptable, especially when
you think he used to drum. But the thing that stands out the most
is the fact that this disc is honest. No fake emotions, no, Tim
brings his songs the way he feels he has to. And that is something
that makes us favourable!
'Cut To The Bone' definitely is worth the listening!

Blues News (Germany) - 2006 (deutsch)

Moe & His Peace Disturbers: ett i alla avseenden elektriskt
band med ett närmast Fabulous Thunderbirdsliknande driv. Men
debutCD "Cut To The Bone".
Leadbelly. Lågbudget i produktion men inte i musikaliskt avseende.
Favorit: Tims egna "Katrina", en ödesmättad
blues med suggestivt 'drone' om katastrofen i New Orleans. Men också
ljuvt vackra instrumentalen "Amalina" - som ett soundtrack
till en pastoral idyll. Bravo!

When I heard this cd, the same sensation hit me as when I heard the music of Robert Johnson and his contemporaries. Their style was highly original. It was where it all came from; it was the base of it all. Just like this cd: simple, but oh so sincere.
Recorded at home with two microphones and a simple mixer. His name is Tim Lothar Petersen, Danish by birth. Although Denmark is not exactly a huge blues country, you might have heard of 'Lightnin Moe'. Tim Lothar was the drummer of this successful band which also was known outside of Denmark. The call of the Delta however was too strong and he swapped his sticks for the slide and the "snaer" for the dobro. He plays songs of Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson and Leadbelly but he also has some originals in that beautiful, old country blues style.
The choice and implementation of the ten songs prove that the man has a lot of respect for the music of that time. "High Sheriff Blues" by Charlie Patton has a sublime slide and for a second you imagine to be thrown back in time when the blues troubadours performed in filthy juke joints. The other tracks bathe in the same atmosphere. "Bound To Go" by Leadbelly (Huddie Leadbetter) and "M&O blues" by Willie Brown sound very solidly.
If you want to experience the early blues, then buy this cd, close your eyes and watch images of "cotton fields" and "front porches" go by. Enjoy!

Blues Box (Germany) - 2006 (deutsch)
"Cut

akustiske blues-selskab!
"Cut To The Bone" er titlen på Tim Lothar Petersens
- serverer sine stemningsfulde numre. Stilen er delta-blues, de
tidlige år, men også meget mere
For Tim bidrager
Cut To The Bone må absolut være en nødvendighed,
hvis man holder af akustisk blues.

Rootstime (Belgium) - 2006 (english)
It was Ivan Jacobs of Hookrock Diepenbeek which gave us the good
news that Lightnin' Moe would be on the bill of this year edition
of that small but nice festival, to be held on July 1st (see Extra
Support). It will be a nice reunion with the boys from Denmark who
delivered a well received and tasty performance at the Belgium Rhytm
& Blues Festival in 2004.
Awaiting their new album, drummer Tim Lothar Petersen declared that
his upcoming solo album would be something quite different. And
indeed, his debut album "Cut To The Bone" offers a fine
portion of acoustic delta blues, recorded at home using two microphones,
a small mixer and a computer. On this very low budget album there
are seven originals and three covers ("High Sheriff Blues"
by Charley Patton, "Bound To Go" by H. Ledbetter en "M
& O Blues" by Willie Brown). The result is amazing because
Petersen only uses a guitar, a dobro and his voice, regularly adding
some echo to the latter, which brings him right in line with the
country, blues and hillbilly tradition of Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson,
Ry Cooder and Skip James. So, it's "back to the roots"
and Petersen delivers 37 minutes of very fine blues and in one go
puts an end to the cliché jokes concerning drummers.
We do hope then that "drummer" Lothar Petersen will perform
some of his acoustic arts live at "Hookrock".

For the whole evening we stayed in a higher region, in this smoky club with
the purest tones of the blues.
My god... I did not know that Denmark was a part of Mississippi.
Tim Lothar Petersen is white on the outside, but on the inside he's black as a coalmine.
Thank you Mr. Petersen... for this wonderful, beautiful evening.
